In this post, we’ll tell you how to make coconut candies at home and the secret to making them taste the best. Are you ready? Let’s go!
What to prepare
- Ingredients:
- Coconut milk (220 grams)
- Caramel (35 grams)
- Sugar (60 grams)
- Coconut oil (10 grams)
- Unsalted butter (10 grams)
- Salt (01 gram).
- Tools:
- Glass storage container (better with a rectangular shape)
- Wax paper (used for preventing candy sticks on the container).
How to make coconut candy
Make sure to follow these 5 steps, and you’ll end up with delicious homemade coconut candy.
- Step 1: Put the layer of wax paper into the container, press the paper perpendicular to the container, and set aside to prepare for the candy cooking process.
- Step 2: Pour coconut milk, caramel, sugar into the cooking pot. Cook the candy on low fire, and stir it constantly to avoid burning it. Keep on stirring until the candy becomes thick and chewy.
The ideal temperature when cooking candy is around 125oC (257oF).
- Step 3: When the candy has thickened and become soft, add coconut oil and pour the candy into the prepared container.
- Step 4: Wait for the candy to cool down, harden, and dry. Then take the candy out and place it on a cutting board. You could sprinkle a layer of flour on the board so the candy wouldn’t get stuck on it. Apply a thin layer of cooking oil on the knife and cut the candy into 1cm square pieces.
- Step 5: Take a thin layer of rice paper (if available) to wrap the candy before wrapping it in regular paper. You can use wax paper to wrap the candy.
How to preserve
Store in a cool place, and keep in a sealed container to protect candy from wind and high temperature.
Tips to make the best coconut candy:
- The Coconuts: Choose the dried, a.k.a old coconuts (10-12 months old). The reason is that the coconut meat inside is thicker, fatter, and white. It will increase the natural sweetness of the candy without being too harsh.
- The tools: Choose the thick pan or cast iron pan.
- When making candy: Stir the candy continuously and evenly to prevent the candy from burning and getting stuck at the bottom of the pan. If you can eat peanuts, you can grind the roasted peanuts and add them while stirring the candy to make it more delicious.
- When wrapping candy: You can wrap a thin layer of edible rice paper on the outside to increase the deliciousness and absorb moisture for the candy.
